  5. Q:  On which systems will Banyan Vines be ported?
  6.  
  7. A:  HP 9000 series 800 Business Servers

  9. Q:  When will the products be available?
  10.  
  11. A:  Banyan VINES on HP-UX will be available by the end of the year.
  12.  
  13. Q:  What will be the channels of distribution?  Who will be
  14.     selling/reselling the products?
  15.  
  16. A:  Banyan will be an HP Premier Solutions Partner, HP's highest
  17.     level of Channel partner designation.  In the U.S. for
  18.     specific customer situations, HP will have the opportunity
  19.     to resell Vines software on HP-UX as a systems integrator.  In Europe,
  20.     the channel strategy is still being developed.  European
  21.     distribution plans will be announced shortly.

  23. Q:  How will Banyan Vines software be supported on HP
  24.     systems?
  25.  
  26. A:  It is expected that HP and Banyan will support their own
  27.     respective products.  Technical Support Agreements have
  28.     been signed which define how our support organizations
  29.     will work together.  This should result in smoother, faster
  30.     results for our customers.  For customers who desire it,
  31.     HP will be providing  software support contracts for Banyan
  32.     Vines on HP-UX as a custom support agreement. Banyan
  33.     resellers will also have the opportunity to provide support
  34.     if they are involved with a sale.

  36. Q:  Will HP and Banyan be offering joint training programs,
  37.     seminars, and sales promotions?

  39. A:  Yes, joint marketing is part of the relationship.  More
  40.     details will come in the future.

  43. Q:  What does the inclusion of Banyan Vines mean to HP's NOS
  44.     strategy?  Which NOS will be most strategic?  (Banyan,
  45.     NetWare, LanManager, Appleshare, NFS?)

  47. A:  HP's overall strategy is to be the Open Systems Leader by
  48.     providing the most robust set of desktop integration
  49.     solutions to HP system customers.  HP will support our
  50.     customers prefered clients for connectivity to the server.
  51.     By offering Banyan Vines support for HP-UX servers, we
  52.     broaden our solutions and support the installed base of
  53.     Vines LAN environments providing integration with our high-
  54.     performance HP/UX servers.  No one NOS is more strategic
  55.     than the other, as we realize our customers may have any of
  56.     the leading NOS's running on their LANS.  (Banyan Vines,
  57.     NetWare or Lan Manager, NFS, Appleshare)

  59. Q:  Is HP the first vendor to have Banyan Vines available?
  60.  
  61. A:  HP is the first RISC Unix vendor to make Vines available on
  62.     their systems.  SCO also supports Banyan Vines today on
  63.     Intel.

  71. Q:  Does the Banyan annoucement have any affect on HP's
  72.     relationships with Microsoft or Novell?

  74. A:  No, HP will continue our strategy of supporting our
  75.     customers preferred desktop environment.

  77. Q:  How does the Banyan announcement impact HP's networking
  78.     strategy?
  79.  
  80. A:  This announcement adds to the HP objective of being the open
  81.     systems vendor of choice.  In providing open system
  82.     connectivity solutions to our customers, we need to provide
  83.     support for and connection to desktop and enterprise-wide
  84.     environments strategic to customers.  Banyan Vines is used
  85.     by many customers as an enterprise network operating
  86.     system.

  88.     By providing support for Banyan Vines on our Commercial Unix
  89.     servers, we now can bring the benefits of commercial Unix,
  90.     (high-reliability, commercial application availability and
  91.     scalability) to Banyan Vines customers.

  93.     From a networking perspective, this solution adds to our
  94.     interoperability and connectivity objectives for supporting
  95.     the client-of-choice and having open-systems networking
  96.     solutions for enterprise-level connectivity.

  99. Q:  Who is involved in the development of VINES on HP-UX?
  100.  
  101. A:  HP and Banyan began working together at the beginning of 1992
  102.     at the request of several common customers.  Banyan's
  103.     R&D organization is porting the product, however HP has
  104.     provided significant assistance such as technical
  105.     support and dedicated HP resources on loan to Banyan to
  106.     ensure the port flows smoothly.

  108. Q:  Is OpenVines on HP-UX portable or native?
  109.  
  110. A:  The OpenVines on HP-UX product will be tightly integrated
  111.     with and specially tuned for the HP-UX operating system.
  112.     Customers will be able to continue running HP-UX
  113.     applications.  We anticipate the tight OpenVines/HP-UX
  114.     integration will provide the NOS performance that customers
  115.     expect and need.

  117. Q:  What are the benefits for porting OPENVINES to a RISC
  118.     UNIX platform for customers?
  119.  
  120. A:  The HP 9000 Series 800 platform provides a scalable
  121.     growth path for Banyan customers who may have outgrown
  122.     existing Intel platforms.  By providing the same rich Banyan
  123.     services on a performant RISC platform, Banyan customers can
  124.     continue to grow without relearning the Banyan software.
  125.     MIS managers of large firms can also operate with a common
  126.     Banyan architecture across multiple hardware platforms. This
  127.     has benefits in terms of ease of management and cost of
  128.     staff training.  For customers not using Banyan today, this
  129.     provides a NOS alternative and Banyan's rich functionality
  130.     which was previously unavailable to RISC UNIX users.
  131.     This port combines Banyan's Enterprise Networking Services
  132.     with the speed and performance of RISC platforms.  This
  133.     enables customers to combine mission-critical applications
  134.     with Banyan Network Services on a single HP 9000 Series 800
  135.     Server, and thus better integrate business applications with
  136.     the desktop and the enterprise.

  138. Q:  What are the benefits of Banyan on the HP 9000 Series 800?
  139.  
  140. A:  The HP 9000 Series 800 will be able to seamlessly
  141.     integrate into existing Banyan networks.
  142.     The HP 9000 Series 800 will be able to offer Banyan's
  143.     acclaimed services such as it's Streetalk Directory
  144.     Services, and Banyan's Messaging Services.

  148. Q:  What is the difference between Banyan on PA-RISC and Novell
  149.     on PA-RISC?
  150.  
  151. A:  These initiatives have different designs.  Banyan's port is to the
  152.     Series 800 under HP-UX.  Therefore, Banyan can operate in
  153.     conjunction with other UNIX applications.  This is similar to HP's other
  154.     NOS offerings which are available today such as LAN Manager for UNIX or
  155.     NetWare for UNIX.

  157.    NetWare PA-RISC is a different architecture in that NetWare is the
  158.    operating system and thus runs directly on top of PA-RISC.  HP-UX
  159.    applications cannot operate in this environment.

  162. Q: What type of Clients will Banyan support?
  163.  
  164. A: Windows, OS/2, and DOS PC's. Also planned are capabilities to tightly
  165.    integrate with UNIX Clients (via NFS) and will include file locking
  166.    between Banyan and NFS, and shared print resources between PC's and
  167.    UNIX workstations.

  169. Q: As an HP-UX user on a PC how would I login to the HP9000 over a
  170.    Banyan Network?
  171.  
  172. A: The VINES for HP-UX product will have a client option called
  173.    Asychronous Terminal Emulation or (Banyan VT) this is a Virtual
  174.    Terminal Capability which runs over VINES/IP.  Alternatively,
  175.    you could use Telnet if PC/ARPA services are installed.  However,
  176.    the latter involves a dual stack implementation and thus uses
  177.    more memory and disk.

  179. Q: If I want to use ARPA services on my PC such as FTP, in addition to
  180.    VINES, will PC/ARPA packages co-exist with Banyan on my client?
  181.  
  182. A: Yes In general, the Banyan client software will co-exist with PC/ARPA
  183.    packages such as FTP Software.
